The Turkic Academy’s Support for ILARA

The Turkic Academy provides invaluable support to ILARA, making it possible to offer two introductory-level classes in Turkic languages during the 2024–2025 academic year.
The Turkic Academy is an international organisation dedicated to fostering scientific and educational exchanges between Turkic-speaking countries and communities.
This collaboration aims to raise awareness of the diversity and cultural richness of lesser-known Turkic languages, which are often overlooked. Spoken across a vast territory, they extend from the Arctic shores of the Far East to the frontiers of Eastern Europe, passing through the steppes of Central Asia, the Caucasus Mountains, and the Iranian and Anatolian plateaus.
As a result of their long history at the crossroads of civilisations, they have been shaped by contact with many linguistic traditions. Over time, they have absorbed elements from and contributed elements to Iranian, Arabic, Slavic, Mongolic, and Chinese languages, among others. Exploring these interactions helps reveal the complexity, dynamism and historical significance of Turkic languages in broader linguistic and cultural transformations.
Thanks to the support of the Turkic Academy, ILARA is offering two introductory classes in these languages in 2024–2025:
- An introduction to Old Turkic, taught by Dorian Pastor;
- An introduction to modern Turkic languages, taught by Murad Suleymanov.
