Old Russian – Konstantinos Vetochnikov (Collège de France, Orient & Méditerranée)

Old Russian or Old Ukrainian (glottocode: oldr1238) was the spoken language of Kievan Rus’. It exhibits notable differences from Old Slavic, both in terms of its simpler grammar and lexicon. It is an Eastern Slavic language, belonging to the Balto-Slavic group of the Indo-European language family. Over time, it evolved into modern Ukrainian, Russian and Belarusian. Unlike Old Slavic, the surviving Old Russian texts are predominantly secular in nature, including chronicles, civil legislation and other similar writings.
