Classical Armenian, beginner level – Agnès Ouzounian (Inalco)
Classical Armenian (glottocode: clas1256) is an autonomous branch within the Indo-European language family that has been documented since the early fifth century, when an alphabet was created for it to facilitate the ongoing evangelization. The written version of the Armenian Bible, which marked the beginning of a rich literature, was accompanied by the translation of religious texts from Greek and Syriac, as well as the production of original works, mainly historical chronicles, that contributed to the establishment of a national identity. Although Armenian literature in the classical language continued to thrive throughout the medieval period, vernacular texts gradually emerged, and by the mid-nineteenth century, Modern Armenian had replaced the ancient language as the literary language of choice.
