Classical Georgian, beginner & advanced levels – Agnès Ouzounian (Inalco)
The Georgian language (glottocode: oldg1234), spoken in the South Caucasus, has been attested since the beginning of the fifth century and has its own unique alphabet and literature that extends over fifteen centuries. The ancient Georgian texts that have been preserved are exclusively Christian writings, either original or translated from Greek, Armenian, Syriac, or Arabic. These include biblical and apocryphal books, liturgical and patristic texts, commentaries, hagiographic and ascetic writings, historical chronicles, and inscriptions. Studying this literature is indispensable for a serious understanding of the Christian East.
