John Baines
John Baines is Professor Emeritus of Egyptology at the University of Oxford. He has been a visiting professor and researcher in Africa, East Asia, Europe, and North America. He is notably the author of Visual and Written Culture in Ancient Egypt (2007) and High Culture and Experience in Ancient Egypt (2013), as well as co-editor of Historical Consciousness and the Use of the Past in the Ancient World (2019).
His articles on ancient civilizations from a comparative point of view have been published in various journals and interdisciplinary collections. Besides comparative analysis, his main research interests are in ancient Egyptian archaeology, art, writing, biography, religion and society.
